The story that caught my eye came out in the recent earnings reports. DICK’S Sporting Goods had its worst day since 2023, with its stock dropping nearly 31% in a single day. A big part of the concern came from Foot Locker, the sneaker giant DICK’S recently acquired. Foot Locker’s sales dipped, and it’s pretty clear sneakers just aren’t what we’re reaching for anymore.
For years, sneakers have been one of the biggest forces in fashion. From limited-edition drops and collaborations to the rise of sneaker culture, it seemed like there was always a new pair everyone wanted. But lately, it feels like shoppers are looking for something different.
Foot Locker isn’t giving up on sneakers. It’s just rethinking what goes on the walls. Instead of stacking them with Nike classics, they’re leaning into comfy elevated styles. The kind of shoes that feel a little more styled than your everyday sneaker.
The sneaker brands are chasing the same vibe too. Puma, Adidas, and even Nike have started rolling out ballet-inspired sneakers, like Puma’s Speedcat Ballet or Adidas’ Taekwondo Mei, that blend a soft, flat-like shape with sneaker comfort. When the sportswear giants start toying with ballet looks, you know the shift is real.
The sneaker slump isn’t random. It’s a real shift in what we want on our feet. I’m feeling it firsthand.
My new daily Go-To
Lately, the thing I keep slipping into is a pair of ballet flats.
There’s something about them that instantly elevates any outfit. Linen pants, jeans, cargo pants, shorts, a skirt, it doesn’t matter. The flats just work. Heading to class, heading to the office, or going out for a quick matcha run, they’re the pair I reach for first.
There’s a style for every mood now: the classic, the Mary Janes, the jelly, even the more athletic branded takes. Whatever the day calls for, there’s a flat that fits.
I used to lean toward an easy pair of casual sneakers by default. The Adidas Sambas, the Golden Gooses, all of it. But these days I find myself skipping right past them. Ballet flats have become my instant way to look a little more pulled together with zero extra effort.
The markets are showing this shift, and so is my shoe rotation. So consider this me officially trading in sneakers. At least for now.
